Nabila 64 - v0.1

Explore the inner workings of an arcade classic, Killer Instinct.

Nabila 64 is an asset viewer written from scratch in C++. The result of over a year and a half of meticulous reverse engineering, this program is designed to read, decode, and render the original sprites, animations, and stages in real-time, directly from the raw data.

It is a custom-tailored tool that interprets the original compression algorithms, dynamically aligns color palettes, and rescues hidden or unused content that was left behind in the source code decades ago.

Key Features:

  • Native Rendering: Built with C++ and GLFW for a smooth and ultra-lightweight performance.
  • Real-Time Decoding: Reads raw data and original compressed formats.
  • Advanced Palette System: Dynamic color mapping with support for absolute transparency and blending.
  • Historical Preservation: Access to UI assets, victory/defeat animations, "no mercy" moves, and discarded content (Unused Assets).

💖 Support the project: Nabila 64 is the result of hundreds of hours of hard work and a passion for video game preservation. If you find this tool useful and want to support its ongoing development (like the upcoming atlas editor and extractor), please consider supporting me on my Patreon!

💡 How to use: Once you launch Nabila 64, it will not load anything automatically. You must manually open/load the kinst.img file from within the program's interface in order to view the assets on screen.

⚠️ Important / Requirements: For Nabila 64 to work, you MUST provide the original data file (kinst.img). Due to copyright reasons, this program does not include any original game files; it acts solely as a viewer for the data you provide.

⚠️ Important / Requirements: The atlas editor and extractor are currently in development. Right now, it only works with character animations.

wow, this is a pretty amazing project! thanks for all of the hard work in the name of preservation. Who knows, this could find its way into the hands of historians one day.

Thank you so much for the kind words. Hearing that this project could have a lasting impact on preservation is honestly the best motivation to keep building it
